Egypt’s National Defense Council Affirms Full Support for Saudi Arabia and Decides to Provide All Necessary Forms of Assistance
The National Defense Council, chaired by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, affirmed Egypt’s full solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, declaring its readiness to provide all necessary forms of support to protect the Kingdom’s security and stability, in light of the escalating tensions and attacks witnessed in the region.
President al-Sisi chaired the National Defense Council meeting at the Presidential Palace on Sunday morning to discuss the latest regional developments and current security challenges, according to a statement issued by the official spokesperson for the Presidency.
The meeting resulted in three key decisions, foremost among them reaffirming Egypt's full support for Saudi Arabia, based on the historical ties between the two countries and the interconnectedness of Saudi national security with Egyptian and Arab national security.
The Council also affirmed its commitment to providing all necessary and possible support to the Kingdom to safeguard its security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, in addition to continuing political and diplomatic efforts in coordination with regional and international partners to de-escalate tensions and resolve existing crises peacefully. The meeting was attended by a number of senior officials, including the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Prime Minister, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of Defense and Military Production, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, the Ministers of Interior, Finance, Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs, the Head of General Intelligence, along with the commanders of the main branches of the Armed Forces, the heads of the relevant authorities, and the Secretary-General of the National Defense Council.
Parliamentary move regarding the protection of Saudi Arabia
The meeting of the National Defense Council comes after statements made by President Sisi on Saturday, in which he affirmed Egypt's readiness to take the necessary measures to defend Saudi Arabia if requested. He also called on the House of Representatives to convene an emergency session to grant the necessary authorization should such action become required.
The House of Representatives is scheduled to discuss the request in an emergency session, in accordance with the constitutional procedures governing decisions related to deploying the armed forces on combat missions outside the country's borders.
The Egyptian decisions reflect two parallel tracks: first, reaffirming solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and supporting its security; and second, intensifying diplomatic efforts to contain tensions and work towards restoring stability in the region.
